누구라도 은총을 줄 수는 없다.

그대가 오직 받아드릴 수만 있는 것이다.

깨달은 사람에게는 항상 은총이 흐르고 있다. 그것은 거기에 있다.

그것은 그의 본성이다.

등불이 탈 때 빛이 나오는 것처럼 깨달은 사람은 항상 은총을 뿜어내고 있다.

조복은 내면의 태도다.

그것은 그대 자신을 완전히 잊어버리는 것이다.

그리고 거기엔 스승만이 남아있다.

그대는 더 이상 존재하지 않는다.

은총은 사랑의 차원에서 일어난다.

붓다는 텅빈 거울이다.

거울은 침묵한다.

거울은 말할게 아무 것도 없다.

다만 비출 뿐이다.

 

붓다 안에 존재계가 비친다.

절대의 세계가 그를 찬양한다.

그 세계가 붓다 안에 반영된다.

그리고 붓다는 아무 것도 하지 않는다.

 

진정한 스승은 거울과 같다.

그는 다만 있는 그대로 비춘다.

그는 철학을 외치지 않으며 교리를 세우지 않는다.

존재계가 그의 철학이며, 삶이 그의 교리이다.

 

한번은 어떤 사람이 붓다에게 이렇게 물었다.

"당신은 왜 기적을 보여주지 않습니까?"

이 질문에 대해 붓다는 이렇게 말했다.

마즈히마 니까야 에서 붓다는 이렇게 말한다.

 

나는 뗏목의 비유를 들어서 뒤에 버리고 가야 할 그 무엇,

지니고 다니지 말아야 할 그 무엇을 가르칠 것이다.

어떤 사람이 뗏목의 도움을 받아 거센 물줄기를 건넜다면 ,

두려움과 의심이 가득 찬 이쪽 기슭을 건너

두려움으로부터의 해방과 안전이 있는 저쪽 기슭에 닿았다면,

그는 뗏목을 어깨에 메고 가지 않을 것이다.

 

그러니 구도의 길을 가는 벗들이여,

우리는 옳지 않은 길은 말할 것도 없고,

올바른 길도 뒤에 버려두고 가야한다.

 

진리에 대한 가르침을 목적지에 도달하기 위한 임의적인 수단으로 받아들여야 한다.

뗏목의 비유는 그것을 보여준다.

약이 효과를 거둔 뒤에는 질병과 아울러 약도 버려야 한다.

그 뒤에도 약을 계속 사용한다면 또 다른 병을 초래할 뿐이다.

 

이것을 기억하라.

모든 것을 버려야 할 뿐 아니라,

그 다음에는 비어 있음마저 버려야 한다.

그 비어 있음은 다만 하나의 약이다.

붓다가 '나는 의사이지 철학자가 아니다'라고 말할 때 그의 말은 옳다.

 

그는 그대에게 집착할 교리를 주지 않는다 .

모든 것이 사라질 때

ㅡ 세상과 신, 물질과 마음, 몸과 영혼, 너와 나, 이 모든 것이 사라지고

마침내 모든 것이 사라졌다는 생각마저 사라졌을 때,

그대는 집에 도달한 것이다.
