전 우주에 대해서는 소우주이고,

자신 안에 이성이라는 신적 속성을 가짐과 동시에

가장 열등한 물질을 소유하고 있다.

지성을 정화함으로 불멸하게 되고

신적으로 되는 것이야말로

인간의 의무가 아닐 수 없다.

지혜는 인간의 모든 덕목 가운데 의뜸이다.

수선화

W, 워즈워어드

골짜기와 언덕 위를 하늘
높이 떠도는 구름처럼
외로이 헤매다가 문득 나는 보았네,
수없이 많은 황금빛 수선화가 크나큰 무리지어
호숫가 나무 밑에서 미풍에
한들한들 춤추는 것을.

은하수를 타고 빛나고 반짝이는 별들처럼
잇따라 수선화는 호반의 가장자리에 끝없이
줄지어 뻗쳐 있었네.

나는 한눈에 보았네,
흥겨운 춤추며 고개를 살랑대는
무수한 수선화를.
호숫물도 옆에서 춤추었으나
반짝이는 물결보다
더욱 흥겹던 수선화,
이토록 즐거운 벗과 어울릴 때
즐겁지 않을 시인이 있을건가,
나는 보고 또 보았다,
그러나 그 광경이 얼마나 값진 재물을 내게 주었는지
나는 미처 몰랐었다.

이따금 하염없이,
혹은 수심에 잠겨 자리에 누워 있으면
수선화는 내 마음 속 눈 앞에서 반짝이는 고독의 축복,
내 가슴 기쁨에 넘쳐
수선화와 춤을 춘다.

통발은 물고기를 잡기 위한 도구인지라 물고기를 잡으면 통발은 잊어버리며,

올무는 토끼를 잡기 위한 도구인지라 토끼를 잡으면 올가미는 잊어버린다.

〈이와 마찬가지로〉 말이라고 하는 것은 뜻을 알기 위한 도구인지라 뜻을 알고 나면 말을 잊어버린다.

〈그런데 세상의 학자들은 뜻보다 말을 중시하여 말을 천착하니〉

내 어디에서 말을 잊은 사람을 만나 그와 함께 이야기할 수 있을 것인가.
