1969년 6월 24일 노르웨이 베르겐에서 태어난 시셀은 영어식 발음으로 "시셀 슈샤바(Sissel Kirkjebo)" 이며

노르웨이 발음으로는 "교회의 언덕"이라는 뜻의 "시슬 쉬르셰뵈"라고 발음된다.

(참조: 노르웨이어는 스웨덴어, 덴마크어와 함께 북유럽어파에 속하는데,

세나라 사람들끼리는 자국어로 이야기를 해도 약간의 의사 소통이 된다고 할 정도로 유사한 구석이 있다.

그 중 스웨덴어가 조금 멀고, 덴마크어와 노르웨이어는 좀 더가까운 편이라고 한다.

유사 계통인 독일어(게르만어 계통)를 배워본 사람들에게는 노르웨이어가 좀 친숙하게 느껴진다.)

9살 때부터 교회의 성가대에서 노래하던 시셀은 10살 때 탤런트 경연대회에 참가하기 시작했으며

11살에는 입상의 영광을 안았다. 1984년 15세의 나이로 [Halv Sju]라는 어린이 TV프로그램에 출연해서

바브라 스트라이젠드의 "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore"를 부르며 재능을 발휘했고,

[Syng Med Oss]라는 TV 프로그램에 합창단의 일원으로 출연하면서 "르네 라손(Rune Larson)"이라는 메니저를 만나

본격적인 가수로 데뷔하게 된다.

17세이던 1986년 10월 21일 발표한 데뷔 앨범 [SISSEL]은 노르웨이에서 360,405(1987년 집계) 장이라는 음반

판매량을 기록하면서 순식간에 스타덤에 올랐다.

그 해 12월에 노르웨이 신문 "Dagbladet"는 시셀을 "The Name Of The Year"에 선정했고 이 때부터 시셀은

노르웨이에서 주목받는 틴에이저 스타로 급성장하기 시작한다.여세를 몰아 1987년 11월에 발표한 크리스마스

앨범 [Glade Jul]는 50만장이상의 판매고를 기록(공식집계로는 389,511장)하면서 12월달에 다시 한번 Dagbladet가

선정한"The Name Of The Year"에 뽑혔는데, 이를 계기로 덴마크의 TV프로그램 "Vnder Vret"에 주인공

Hans Otto Bisgaards 와 출연하면서 북유럽쪽에서 서서히 시셀의 이름이 알려지기 시작했다.

1988년 Chateau Neuf에서 "마리아 본 트랩"역으로 출연한 뮤지컬 "The Sound of Music"이 큰 성공을 거두면서

가창력과 재능을 인정받았고 1989년 10월 세번째 앨범 [Soria Moria]를 발표했다.

이 시기가 시셀에게는 인생의 중요한 분기점이 되는데, 10월 28일 스웨덴의 방송에 출연한 그녀는 덴마크의 가수이자

코메디언인 "에디 스콜러(Eddie Skoller)"를 방송 도중 만나게 된다.

두 사람의 사이는 급속도로 가까워졌고 1990년 1월 두사람의 로맨스가 보도를 통해 공식적으로 발표 되었다.

1992년 Neil Sedaka 의 "Solitaire", "Breaking up is hard to do", "Miracle"등에 포인트를 둔

영어 앨범 [Gift of Love]를 전세계 시장에 발표한 시셀은 본격적으로 세계무대로 눈을 돌리기 시작했고,

1993년 8월 21일 베르겐 Mariakirken에서 25살 연상의 에디 스콜러와 21살의 나이로 결혼식을 올리며 화제를 뿌리기도 했다.

시셀은 이미 노르웨이 최고의 가수가 되어 있었으며 북유럽에서 그녀의 명성은 상당한 수준이었는데,

시셀이 세계적으로 이름을 알리는 계기는 1994년 릴레함메르 동계 올림픽에서 Placido Domingo 와 듀엣으로 부른 공식 주제곡

"Fire In Your Heart(원어 제목 : La Ilden Lyse)"를 부르면서 부터다.

이후 플라시도 도밍고는 그녀를 비엔나의 크리스마스 축제로 초청해 Charles Aznavour 와 함께 공연했으며,

[Christmas In Vienna III]를 녹음했다. 이 시기부터 세계의 유명한 연주자들과의 협연이 시작되었고,

북유럽의 신비로운 음색을 지닌 시셀은 세계적인 스타로 거듭나게 되었다.

(1994년 [Innerst I Sjelen(Deepest Within My Soul)]을 발표한 시셀은 이후 6년동안 개인 음반 작업을 하지 않았다.)

1996년 2월 16일 그녀는 첫번째 아이 Ingrid 를 출산했고, 아이의 양육을 위해 1년 정도 음악계를 떠나게 되는데,

이 시기에 미국 애니메이션 영화 [아나스타샤(Anastasia)]의 주제곡을 불러달라는 섭외가 들어왔지만그녀는아이를 위해 거절했다.

1997년 다시 음악 활동을 시작한 시셀"은 미국에서 1년 정도 머무르며 영화 [타이타닉(Titanic)]의 사운드 트랙 앨범에 참여하게 되는데

영화가 엄청난 히트를 치고 사운드 트랙 앨범도 1천만장 이상의 폭발적인 판매고를 기록하자 미국에서도 그녀의 매력적인 음색에 매료되었고 음악적 재능을 인정하기 시작했다.

L.A.의 랩퍼 워렌 (Warren G)과 함께 노래한 클래식 힙합 크로스오버 앨범 [Prince Igor(1997)]까지 유럽에서 큰 인기를 얻었으며,

아일랜드 포크록 그룹 Chieftains 와 미국의 유명한 "데이비드 레터맨쇼"에 출연하고, 카네기 홀에서 공연을 하기도 했다. 또 Celine Dion, Sting, Diana Krall 등과 함께 공연하면서 활동 범위의 폭도 다양하고 넓어졌다.

1999년 8월, 둘째 아이(딸, "Sarah")를 출산한 시셀은 다시 음악활동을 중지했으며, 2000년 11월 새 앨범 [All Good Thing]을 들고 등장했다.

6년만에 발표한 시셀의 독집 앨범은 낙천적인 그녀의 성격과 가수로서의 성공에 집착하지 않는 그녀의 느긋한 품성이 엿보이는 작품으로

세계적인 히트를 기록했다.

노르웨이의 샛별 Lene Marlin과 Espen Lind의 곡들이 수록되어 있는 이 앨범은 르네 말린을 키워낸 프로듀서 "외른 달(Jorn Dahl)"이

총 지휘를 맡아 전통적인 노르웨이 음악을 기반으로 새로운 창작품들을 이끌어낸 '21세기형 노르웨이 음악의 산물'이라는 호평을 받았다.

시셀의 명성이 우리나라에 알려지게 된 시기는 불과 1~2년정도 전이지만 이미 일본에서는 엄청난 인기를 끌고 있었는데,

일본에서 2000년 방영되어 큰 인기를 누린 [Summer Snow]라는 드라마에서 테마음악으로 사용된 시셀의 "Summer Snow"는

유명한 팬파이프 연주자 Gheorghe Zamfir가 연주를 하면서 큰 화제가 되기도 했다.
